Iplex Australia secures $51 million Townsville Haughton Pipeline contract

The announcement is the second major contract to be awarded to the leading Australian water industry supplier, Iplex Australia, as part of the project, which will provide water security to the growing city of Townsville.

Since the project began in 2018, Iplex, a subsidiary of Fletcher Building, has secured over $100 million in contracts as part of its partnership with the Queensland Government and Townsville City Council.

Iplex Australia General Manager Paul Lavelle said Iplex was pleased to continue its role as the chosen water infrastructure partner for the Queensland State Government.

“With the population of Townsville forecast to grow to 282,000 people by 2041,* a long-term focus on water security for the region is a must,” Mr Lavelle said.

“We are proud to be playing a pivotal role in the development of North Queensland and the upskilling of the Townsville workforce.”

Benefits generated for Townsville by Iplex since the Haughton pipeline was first announced include:

• Growing the Bohle (Townsville) polyethylene (PE) plant, which has produced high-quality piping for the region and provided local jobs.

• Continuing to invest in the Iplex foundry in Innisfail, the only foundry of its type in North Queensland which provides 90 local jobs.

• Purchasing over ~$2.3 million of products and services within the Townsville region as part of Stage 1 of the Haughton Pipeline project, with our key subcontractors purchasing over $2 million locally over the same period – significantly benefiting the local economy

• Providing Townsville with up to 30 direct and indirect jobs as part of the Haughton Pipeline Stage 2 program.

• Recycling of PE materials for re-use at the Townsville site.

• Maintaining an extensive inventory of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) across all its plastic products, as an industry leader in transparency and sustainability.

“When we partner with a community, we don’t just want to do business. We want to help our employees, contractors, and by extension the city of Townsville to prosper,” Mr Lavelle said.

Iplex will continue its long-term partnership with RPC Pipe Systems (RPC PS) to supply the FLOWTITE® GRP pipe and fittings technology for the Haughton Pipeline Project Stage 2.

The proven and trusted technology, while used widely across Australia, was the first of its kind to be used in the North Queensland region.

“The GRP pipe manufacturing technology is lightweight, safe, easy and fast to install, and will deliver installation and running cost savings over the life of the project,” Mr Lavelle said.

The announcement on the competitive tender process was made by the Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill and Queensland Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, Steven Miles.
