Tunnel boring around Lake Wendouree in February will allow for the installation of electrical conduits in Ballarat, Victoria.
The $3,170,000 Lake Wendouree and Victoria Park Link Lighting project will require a total of 7 km of electrical conduits to power 232 light poles around the lake and on the route between it and Victoria Park.
The boring will occur at a depth of one metre, chosen in order to mitigate some of the impact on tree root systems while keeping surface disruptions to a minimum.
Tunnel boring teams are working with a project arborist, and sticking tree protection and structural root zones in the area around the lake.
Ballarat Mayor Des Hudson said that the project will encourage more residents to get more use out of the lake’s surrounds.
“We are working to have lake lighting switched on in time for the darker winter months ahead so that our residents can enjoy an accessible and safe environment when the sun sets earlier,” he said.
