Melbourne Water sewer relining project wins safety award at National Water Awards

Melbourne Water along with partners John Holland-KBR Joint Venture, Interflow and Welltech Total Water Management, has won the Water Industry Safety Excellent award for the Epsom Main Sewer Rehabilitation project.

The Water Industry Safety Excellence award recognises initiatives that actively improve safety and injury prevention for everyone working with water.

The Epsom Main Sewer (EPS) rehabilitation project involved relining two sections of the EPS, which transfers sewage flows from Melbourne’s inner western suburbs to North Yarra Main (NYM).

Works involved upgrades on 1.6km of the approximately 5.1km EPS, which utilised non-dig rehabilitation solutions and relining within the existing asset.

Specifically, the project used technology known as ‘Cured in Place Pipe’ to reline the majority of the sewer sections.  As CIPP requires a dry environment, a custom mechanical plug enabled flow diversion and safely sealed out flows and sewer gases.  The concept, design, fabrication and installation of the engineered plug was managed by Interflow.

This ensured the safety of the relining workers who were up to 28 metres below ground, and made sure flows could be returned safely under heavy rainfall.

The National Water Awards were held last month in Sydney, as part of Ozwater’23.
