No-Dig Down Under puts the spotlight on new installations

HDD

This year, the conference is focussing on three sine qua non aspects of the trenchless industry: rehabilitation, new installations, trenchless services, and social and environmental aspects. Today, Trenchless Australasia looks at the new installation part of the conference.

When it comes to new installations, trenchless pros often use their horizontal directional drilling (HDD) skills.

Engineer Dale Ostens will present on Wednesday 13 September at 11:30am a case study of a remote series of four HDDs connecting service runs over challenging mountainous terrain, the last of which will be a large diameter bore carrying a pipe bundle.

An optioneering phase considered numerous construction methods to connect these services, however, it was clear that the solution belonged in the trenchless field, using the newest installation methods, specifically HDD intercept.

Senior pipeline geohazard specialist Neil Ripley will also focus on HDD for this year’s conference, as the management of pipelines within landslides is challenging, particularly when dealing with deep-seated landslides posing a significant risk to pipeline infrastructure. This insightful session will take place on Wednesday 13 September at 2:30pm.

Ripley’s case study will present a case-study of a pipeline operator managing an HDD pipeline within an active deep-seated landslide in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin in northwestern Alberta.

Last but not least, Ben Hayes, sales manager at Herrenknecht, also chose to make HDD his centre of focus. He will present his case study on Wednesday 13 September at 4pm.

The development of sufficient pipeline capacity, a sustainable power grid and the protection of the networks against the increasing threat from environmental factors are the major challenges for future energy supply.

Due to the public environmental awareness, smart trenchless installation methods are required for fast and safe installations.

For crossing obstacles along the routes or installing landfall solutions in sensitive coastal areas, HDD is the preferred option, as it is an economic and industry-proven technology to be considered as long as the ground conditions allow a safe drilling process.
