Learn how Victoria’s longest twin road tunnels will be built

north east link TBM

The North East Link Tunnels have been extended with an extra 1.9km of tunnels dug by tunnel boring machines (TBM), to create twin 6.5km tunnels.

The state’s longest twin road tunnels is being built with a design that focuses on protecting homes and sensitive environmental areas, including the Yarra River.

At the northern end of the tunnel, the TBM will be launched and operated near Lenola Street, Macleod, and Winsor Reserve will be used to support construction works and tunnelling.

The new Greensborough Road boulevard will run from Watsonia to Rosanna which will improve local access to the North East Link Tunnels.

In Bulleen, the Manningham Road interchange will be built, with a new wetland and Indigenous cultural precinct along the banks of the Yarra River, an upgraded Bulleen Road with safer access to schools, playing fields and sports clubs, a tunnel ventilation structure, the new Yarra Link green bridge and Eastern Freeway interchange.
