Consultation opens for reconfiguration system

water consultation

Southern Rural Water has started customer engagement on the Werribee System Reconfiguration Project, with the first customer reference group held in March.

The customer reference group met to discuss the project, which examines how potable, river and recycled water might be used in the Werribee River system.

The customer reference group was appointed following an expression of interest process in late 2023 and will support the project team to understand customer needs and requirements for a future irrigation supply system.

Feedback from the group will be important to inform a business case for the Werribee System Reconfiguration Project, which will consider irrigation opportunities alongside potable water, river health, environment and traditional owner benefits.

Six customer reference group meetings will be held from March to August, with a preliminary business case due in 2024 and a final business case due in 2026.

The Werribee River system extends along the length of the Werribee River, and includes Pykes Creek, Merrimu and Melton reservoirs and the Werribee and Bacchus Marsh irrigation districts.

The Werribee System Reconfiguration Project was identified as a key project outcome of the Central and Gippsland Region Sustainable Water Strategy.
