The Metro Tunnel’s State Library Station precinct in Melbourne will move towards the final phase of construction with reinstatement and public works underway.
The works include removing sections of the existing traffic lanes and kerb, traffic islands and vehicle and motorcycle parking bays using non-destructive digging (NDD), digging, excavating and saw cutting.
It will also include installing new infrastructure including stormwater drainage, reconstructing traffic lanes and constructing protected bike lanes.
The staged works kicked off at the beginning of August are set to continue until late 2024.
The Metro Tunnel will create a new end-to-end rail line from Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in Melbourne’s south east, with bigger and more modern trains, and five new stations. The Metro Tunnel is anticipated to open in 2025.
It will give passengers direct train access to new destinations, Anzac Station, Melbourne’s major health and education precinct at Parkville Station and North Melbourne at Arden Station.
In preparation for the project opening, test trains are set to run another 150,000km back and forth under the city.
They have already travelled almost 20,000km since first entering the tunnel in 2023.
