Empire Infrastructure helps deliver major water upgrades for Sydney

Empire Infrastructure and Rob Carr are helping to deliver a $90 million upgrade to Sydney’s North West Growth Area (NWGA).

Rob Carr has been awarded a microtunnelling contract through Confluence Water for the NWGA project, a major upgrade in collaboration with Sydney Water.

“It has been a great opportunity for Empire Infrastructure to supply pipes to Rob Carr for the NWGA project,” Empire Infrastructure told Energy Today.

“The project includes almost 700m of DN1200 and DN500 CP&P Reinforced Concrete Jacking Pipes.

“We are looking forward to seeing the completion of this section of works in the not-too-distant future.”

Rob Carr general manager Angelo Soumboulidis praised Empire Infrastructure for its role in the project.

“Our experience with Empire is always exceptional. The pipe is reliable and of high quality,” he said.

“Empire’s customer service ultimately exceeds our expectations every time.”

The NWGA project will provide drinking water and wastewater services to roughly 17,000 homes by mid-2025.

Sydney Water senior project manager James Paton said the microtunnelling works will dig 10m underground and 700m in length.

“Microtunnelling is a trenchless technique which utilises a remotely controlled boring machine to excavate a tunnel and concurrently install pipes,” he said.

Microtunelling will be used for deep sections of pipe and to minimise surface disruption and assist in the end goal of providing critical water infrastructure to the city’s future housing.

“The use of microtunnelling for the project ensures precise alignment and grade control,” Paton said.

“Confluence, through Rob Carr, have utilised laser guidance systems and temporary works design to ensure the tunnel meets specifications and existing assets remain undisturbed.”

Paton noted the importance of investing in water infrastructure for Sydney’s future growth.

“As Sydney looks ahead to an expanding future, this strategic investment in water infrastructure exemplifies a commitment to sustainable growth and community wellbeing,” he said, “laying the foundation for generations to thrive in North West Sydney.”
