Major pipe for major works in Sydney’s underground infrastructure

Empire Infrastructure is delivering an Australian first of its kind microtunneling pipe system to Sydney to assist with the Thornleigh Inlet Outlet Main Project.

More than 1.1 km of OD2400 Reinforced Concrete steel Cylinder Pipe Jacking Pipes (RCCP-J) for a major raw water application have been delivered to Thornleigh.

These pipes are engineered to tackle extended trenchless drives while conveying potable water at high pressures. Dubbed the “Toughest Jacking Pipes” ever in Australia, they were built to handle:

·       Jacking loads over 3,700 tonnes,

·       Depths of more than 40m

·       Operating pressures of 16 bar

The first shipment of these OD2400, 21 tonne behemoths have landed in Sydney’s Thornleigh, and the installation is well underway.

Also on its way to support the complexities of the project:

·       10 x Inter-Jacking Station (IJS) pipe sets

·       Anti-roll pipes and sacrificial MTBM starter pipes

·       Robust SL-welded joints & internal anti-abrasion liners

From manufacturing to delivery and installation, every step has been tailored to support the unique ground and design conditions of this major Sydney underground infrastructure project.

The Empire team worked closely with their supply partner PT Bonna Indonesia and the delivery contractor to ensure every element met the required tolerances, corrosion protection, and jacking performance criteria.
