Metro Tunnel makes great progress

In November, Metro Tunnel announced that it would amp up work on Victoria’s biggest transport project throughout the summer months.

At the time, Meg – the second TBM – had progressed approximately 50 m towards the tunnel entrance in Kensington and installed more than 20 rings while the project’s first TBM, Joan, had travelled more than 250 m and installed more than 140 rings.

Now, TBM Joan has travelled 840 m towards Kensington and installed more than 494 rings to line the new tunnel.

The assembly of Joan – the first of four TBM’s for the project – began in early June 2019 with tunnelling beginning that August.

TBM Meg followed shortly thereafter and has now travelled more than 466 m towards Kensington and has installed more than 274 rings to line the tunnel.

Each TBM is 120 m long, weighing 1,100 t and is designed to complete drives of approximately 10 m/d, installing a total of 56,000 concrete segments to line the tunnels over the entire project.
