A busy year for Pezzimenti

Pezzimenti Trenchless’ versatility and excellence has been proven once again when it comes to pipeline construction projects. 

Pezzimenti Trenchless director Joe Pezzimenti said there is no better proof than two diametrically opposed projects to illustrate a company’s resourcefulness.

“We were the right choose for Mile Creek due to our small footprint, versatility and our efficient set up and demobilisation times and our projected drilling rates in which we exceeded the clients’ expectations,” he said.

“For Newhaven we were chosen again as our equipment was best suited to the basalt ground conditions and efficiency.”

That’s Pezzimenti Trenchless’ latest prowess, as the company successfully completed two major and very different projects in 2023.

The first project involved the microtunnelling of 324mm OD, 345mm OD and 550mm OD Hobas glass reinforced plastic (GRP) jacking pipes on the Mile Creek Branch Sewer located in Noble Park.

Pezzimenti Trenchless was contracted by Jaydo Constructions and South East Water (SEW), which Joe says didn’t come without its challenges. 

“Challenges included constant ground water requiring 24/7 dewatering, tight residential streets requiring traffic and pedestrian control, wet sandy ground conditions,” he said.

Ground conditions included sand and clayey sands, where the company completed 1600m with a further 400m to be completed in the next six weeks.

“We commenced in March 2023, with our crew going between Mile Creek and the Elster Creek BS for Jaydo and SEW where a further 750m was completed,” Joe said.

The second project involved the microtunnelling of three 1250mm diameter tunnels for the installation of three 1050mm RC jacking pipe under Tarneit Road with just 1m clearance between the three tunnels.

Entracon Civil contracted Pezzimenti Trenchless for this project, that is located on the Newhaven Estate Outfall Drain, Tarneit.

Each bore length was 30m and the ground conditions was basalt.

Joe said this project also included significant challenges for the trenchless industry leader.

“Challenges included basalt up to 100 megapascals (Mpa) mixed with boulders which required a cutter redesign to allow the boulders to be crushed to allow our vacuum system to extract back to the surface, the 1.0m clearance between the tunnels meant that accuracy was essential,” he said.
