Power of people for emergency responses

One of Australia’s largest pipeline renewal companies, Interflow, has firsthand knowledge of the importance of experience, dedication and initiative when disaster strikes.

After the 2011 earthquake hit Christchurch, New Zealand, eight years of works to renew and rebuild the city’s infrastructure begun and Interflow was one of the first contractors on site to help restore and repair the damaged wastewater pipelines and sewage services.

Over the initial five-year repair phase (2011–16), Interflow brought 16 Australian-based staff to Christchurch, while appointing 20 new staff to the pre-existing 22-person Christchurch-based team.

Interflow General Manager – New Zealand Blair Telfer said every member rallied to assist with the repair operation and get the city back up and running as quickly as possible.

“There were a number of differing projects that were outside of the norm that required bespoke design,” said Mr Telfer.

“By having a team of experienced specialists and engineers in Australia supporting our New Zealand crews, we were able to brainstorm and come up with innovative ideas and then prove that they would be robust and meet design and specification requirements.

“As trenchless techniques are quite unique and specialised by their very nature, there are few trained persons.

“Training had to happen on the job.

“Fortunately, Interflow had a team of dedicated technical trainers who provided on-the-job training and certification, which sped up productivity and ensured that high quality standards were maintained.”

While appropriate training may be a challenge in one situation, acquiring the necessary tools and materials can be another.

In 2018, a failure in the City of Gold Coast’s Eastern Force Main was detected in one of the two large rising mains that takes sewage from about 200,000 people in the city’s north to the Coombabah Sewage Treatment Plant.

A Germany-manufactured Primus Liner® was selected for the job and Interflow Manager Emerging Markets Will Zillmann said Interflow’s industry connections and contacts meant that the necessary tools and materials were procured earlier than the anticipated two-week to three month period.

Knowing that Sydney Water had additional correctly-sized Primus Line stock and that Queensland Urban Utilities owned the tools required, Interflow contacted each of the utilities, which were willing to help during the emergency.

“These industry connections and relationships were key to getting the materials and tools we needed to complete this job, which saved on freight costs and meant Interflow could begin renewing the pipes within days of the fault being detected,” said Mr Zillman.

Through these experiences, Interflow credits having well established contacts; mobile necessary personnel, tools and materials; extensive in-house experience; and a dedicated team to ensuring the best chances of positive outcomes when faced with unexpected disasters.

2022 No-Dig Down Under to feature three-stream conference program

These five reasons make No-Dig Down Under an unmissable event

In its almost 20-year history, No-Dig Down Under has grown to become one of the most important, and largest, trenchless technology events in the world.

Taking place in Melbourne on 10–13 September, the event – supported by ASTT – will feature, a world-class conference program, the largest trade exhibition in the event’s history and training courses presented by international experts.

These five reasons make No-Dig Down Under standout as an unmissable trenchless event and as important as any no-dig event anywhere in the world.

1) Learn about how leading utilities are using no-dig methods in the conference

Asset owners play a vital role in the application of trenchless technology, which is why more than 40 per cent of the conference program consists of Australia and New Zealand’s leading utilities, operators and municipalities, including Sydney Water, Yarra Valley Water, Watercare, APA Group, Tas Gas Networks and Dial Before You Dig, as well as leading contractors such as John Holland, McConnell Dowell, Interflow and HDI Lucas.

The conference program, which was assembled from more than 130 paper submissions, also includes presentations on research and education into trenchless technologies from organisations such as the Water Services Association of Australia, Monash University and the University of Auckland.

Secure your attendance at the conference by registering today via the No-Dig Down Under website.

2) See the latest products in action in the exhibition hall

The exhibition will feature more than 100 of the world’s leading suppliers, manufacturers and service providers of the latest trenchless solutions for the installation, rehabilitation and location of underground infrastructure assets.

Many of these companies will be presenting practical demonstrations of their equipment, which is an important opportunity to see these products in action.

Make sure you set aside some time to walk through the giant hall (it might take you a while!) and grab a copy of the September edition of Trenchless Australasia for a guide on who to visit.

3) Celebrate the success of the industry at the Gala Dinner and Awards Evening

Arguably the most prestigious night on the trenchless calendar, this formal black tie event – sponsored by National Environmental Equipment (NATEE) – features the presentation of the biennial ASTT Awards, recognising and celebrating the achievements of the Australasian trenchless industry.

In total, five awards will be presented, honouring the rehabilitation and installation projects of the year; new technology; young person of the year; and person of the year.

Full conference registrations include access to the function, taking place on Thursday 12 September; otherwise, tickets can be purchased individually or as a table of 10.

4) Take advantage of invaluable networking opportunities at the social functions

In addition to the gala dinner, No-Dig Down Under will feature two more social functions, providing networking opportunities in a relaxed atmosphere.

On the evening of Tuesday 10 September, the exhibition will officially open with a ceremony, sponsored by Vermeer, with drinks and appetisers in the hall.

The opening is an opportunity to get a first glimpse of the exhibition hall and speak to exhibitors about their products and services before the general public the following morning.

Taking place the next evening, Wednesday 11 September, the Networking Reception – also sponsored by Vermeer – will be hosted on the bank of Melbourne’s famous Yarra River, opposite the city’s CBD, the reception is an opportunity to rub shoulders with the leaders of Australia and New Zealand’s trenchless industry.

Not only will the function feature great food, drinks and entertainment, but also a whiskey bar for those who are that way inclined.

5) Increase your trenchless knowledge by attending a training course

Originally developed by the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT), ASTT licensed the training courses and adapted them for Australasian audiences.

They are internationally recognised as the pinnacle of trenchless education and training, and offer an opportunity to be taught by global experts on the latest techniques and best practice.

In 2019, three courses will be presented: Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) Good Practices Course, Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) Good Practices Guidelines Course, New Installation Methods Good Practices Course.

If you are interested in registering for the training courses, contact conferences@gs-press.com.au or visit www.nodigdownunder.com.au

Organised by Great Southern Press, the publisher of Trenchless Australasia, No-Dig Down Under is made possible by the generous support of Platinum Sponsor National Environmental Equipment (NATEE); Gold Sponsor Vermeer; Silver Sponsors KRE Engineering, Pezzimenti Trenchless and Vivax Metrotech; and Bronze Sponsors Interflow, Smart Lock and Ashapura.

The event is proud to raise funds and awareness for its Charity Partner WaterAid.

McRobert inspects and relines deteriorated pump station

McRobert Contracting Services initially conducted a level two 3D laser scan of a sewer pump station in Mandurah, in the Peel Region of Western Australia in 2016.

The inspection revealed all internal concrete surfaces had been severely affected by biogenic sulphide corrosion. Significantly, it showed over 100 per cent of the concrete cover had deteriorated from the lower sections of the wet well walls.

In 2017, McRobert was subsequently contracted to complete the structural relining of the pump station inlet chamber and wet wells, using it’s patented relining methodologies.

The wet well walls ready for pH tests and reinforcement repairs.

Due to the extent of the deterioration, the contractor performed concrete and reinforcement repairs to the walls of the pump station, prior to installing rigid PVC as per the company’s patented whaler system. Initially, the walls were cleaned and loose corroded material from the walls was removed until only sound concrete remained.

pH testing was completed to ensure this was achieved. At this stage, McRobert completed a secondary laser scan to determine the true extent of the deterioration, which was illustrated to be significantly more than expected.

From the results of the laser scan, the company was able to accurately fabricate all required components for the structural relining.

Reinforcements

Steel reinforcement repairs were completed on the walls where reinforcement bars were exposed and corroded. McRobert’s lining system was then employed to cover the existing walls, essentially rebuilding the initial structure with a new 12 mm thick PVC lining and minimum 40 mm of grout between the existing concrete and new PVC wall.

A 3D point cloud illustration outlining data collected during the initial inspection of pump station.

The contractor then removed the original benching from the inlet chamber and wet wells, before fabricating and installing new benches made from a combination of both rigid and flexible PVC. All internal surfaces were now fully plastic lined and welded. Two penstocks were installed to the inlet chamber and all new gatic lids were retrofitted to the existing plastic-lined top slab.

Final touches

Finally, all internal plastic lined surfaces were spark tested, to ensure a 100 per cent complete gas tight seal within the pump station, ensuring complete protection from any further corrosion. McRobert provides a 50-year guarantee on all materials and workmanship completed as part of the company’s patented lining methodologies.

funding for water business cases

Collaboration drives water industry innovation

The patented sonar array optical technology, developed by UNSW, will be used to detect leaks in Sydney Water’s network.

With an estimated loss of 10 per cent per day from the city’s water mains, the technology has the potential to save billions of litres of water each year.

Sydney Water has funded UNSW School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications Professor Francois Ladouceur and partners Thales Underwater Systems and Zedelef to test whether the optical sonar array technology can accurately pinpoint leaks in the city’s water pipes.

The initial viability of the technology’s use for ocean monitoring was confirmed in successful trials at Lake Macquarie in 2018.

For the 2019 Sydney Water trial, the sonar array will be placed in a water main before a leak is simulated.

“Our sonar array is like a 50 m strip of garden hose with 16 microphones inside it, equally distributed along its length,” said Mr Ladouceur.

“These microphones detect the smallest of sounds and we use a single optical fibre to send all this information back to dedicated software that computes where a leak is located.”

Current technology requires an expensive and difficult-to-handle bundle of wires for the array; Mr Ladouceur said that optical technology will allow this bundle to be replaced with a cheaper, lighter and more durable single optical fibre.

If successful, large areas of the water network could be regularly inspected with the design of a longer sonar array, or robots could be used to drag arrays over vast distances through the pipes to listen for leaks.

The trial is part of a wider project – led by the NSW Smart Sensing Network and funded by Sydney Water and other utilities – that brings together five Australian universities to test emerging leak detection technologies.

“If the economics work out, our technology could be laid down inside of all new pipes as they’re being built, and then they will have permanent leak detection,” said Mr Ladouceur.

Veolia optimising inspection and infrastructure management

With sewer blockages costing the Australian urban water industry millions of dollars in remediation services each year, Veolia has set out to find a better solution than purely routine inspections in order to prevent incoming damages.

The company now believes the answer lies in data and analytics, delivered through insights and industry expertise.

Veolia will use decades of datasets, including asset information and work order history, to ascertain where future incidents are likely to occur and reduce costs associated with managing water operations.

Veolia Project Manager Quentin Bechet said the municipal water industry had a great opportunity on its hands.

“Being able to predict sewer blockages and water bursts before they happen will be a game changer,” he said.

“Operations will move from a purely reactive to a proactive mode.”

Veolia operates 123 water and wastewater treatment plants across Australia and New Zealand.

Quality surveying for Victoria’s largest road infrastructure project

The company supplied its client with a Quality Level A survey of underground utilities that conflicted with the alignment of the road, ensuring the planned construction can progress without incident or disruption to the community.

Construction of the North East Link recently started on the outskirts of Melbourne, Victoria. The new freeway, desperately required to alleviate congestion in the northeastern suburbs of the city, will connect the cities freeway network between an upgraded Eastern Freeway from Springvale Road to the M80 Ring Road.

According to the Victorian Government, the new road will facilitate the movement of 100,000 vehicles a day, linking growth areas in the north and southeast of the city. The AU$15.8 billion project is the biggest road transport infrastructure investment in the state’s history and will also feature the state’s longest twin road tunnel.

Early works

As part of the North East Link early works Rangedale Drainage Services was engaged by GHD to provide a ‘Quality Level A Survey’ of all underground utilities conflicting with the proposed alignment in the Greensborough area.

Rangedale Drainage Services is a unique drainage company, equipped and capable of providing a vast range of drainage, utility and infrastructure services from start to finish with a high level of quality and attention to detail. The company specialises in the application of trenchless technology, using advanced methods such as non-destructive digging.

In addition, the company covers all aspects of civil and drainage works such as pipe relining, CCTV inspection, pipe repair and replacement, hydro excavation and combo cleaning/vacuum loading, traffic management, backfill reinstatement and asphalting, and project management services across many industries.

For the early works, the company, in consultation with GHD, compiled a project specific methodology and intense program which took into account the complexities of the site, as well as the constraints of high volumes of traffic, limited working areas and hours, residents, businesses and the environment.

Getting started

The project was undertaken with a focus on minimising the impact on all stakeholders, the environment and surrounding community. After months of pre-planning, site works kicked off in early November 2018.

The project included varied work taking place simultaneously, including electronic service location, ground penetrating radar, asphalt and road cutting, hydro excavation, surveying, back filling and hot mix asphalt road reinstatement.

Throughout the execution of the project, Rangedale Drainage Services provided professional in-house turnkey solutions to deliver the survey. This project, in partnership with the client, was successfully completed with the combined effort of the integrated project team.

All works were completed under major traffic management restrictions, providing safety to all project personnel while maintaining suitable traffic conditions for motorists and pedestrians. Throughout the duration of the project, the work continued its focus on impact minimisation, while protecting assets and personnel. A similar focus on safety delivered a zero-harm outcome in a timely manner to meet the project delivery date of late December 2018.

The data obtained in these early works will ensure future contractors can rely on accurate and quality data, enabling them to deliver a quality project.

A rapid solution to overflow issues

The Sewer Line Rapid Assessment Tool (SL-RAT) – manufactured by InfoSense and distributed in Australia by Austeck – is a portable on-site assessment tool that relies on acoustic assessment methods, rather than traditional visual inspection, to assess blockages in small diameter gravity sewers and provide information to operators within minutes.

Unlike traditional CCTV inspection systems, SL-RAT is installed above the entrance to the pipe segment, where its transmitter – the TX unit – sends an acoustic tonal pulse down into the asset. The receiver – or RX unit – comprises a microphone and signal processing system that ‘listens’ to the acoustic signal and interprets the blockage data.

It then produces an assessment of the blockage conditions, assigning it a score on a scale of 0 to 10, with a score of 10 indicating the line is absolutely clear and a score of 0 indicating a complete blockage.

Advantages

In addition to the speed of the assessment, SL-RAT has no flow contact, which can result in lower operating costs when compared to traditional CCTV technologies. It also allows wastewater operators to use less resources to implement a condition-based maintenance strategy, which monitors the current conditions of an asset to predict when future inspection and maintenance should be scheduled.

SL-RAT components are equipped with GPS, as well as the ability for the TX and RX units to communicate using a radio frequency. This allows the system to provide class data labelling, data registration and test validation services.

Trials

Austeck initially introduced SL-RAT to the Australasian market in 2014, with Sydney Water undertaking trials of the technology in 2015 as part of an effort to use innovative technology to achieve more valuable solutions when optimising asset programs for wastewater networks.

According to a paper by Sydney Water’s Steve Barclay and Virginia Cheng, during the trial more than 90 pipes previously identified due to poor past choke performance in the utility’s yearlong cyclic cleaning program were assessed. A total length of 4,462 m was inspected, comprising 150 mm and 225 mm diameter pipes.

The trial provided some interesting results, showing that almost 60 per cent of the pipes in the Sydney Water’s cyclic cleaning program did not require further cleaning. The implications of this are significant: considering the utility’s network of more than 24,000 km of sewer pipes, the technology would allow for the prioritisation of blocked segments over already clear pipes, resulting in better service to customers and increased environmental protection.

Results from the trial also showed that SL-RAT’s scoring system aligns closely with the Conduit Inspection Reporting Code of Australia, as well as the GPS resulting in more than 80 per cent accuracy to 10 m.

The report – which led to the implementation of SL-RAT – concluded that the current process of cleaning and performing subsequent CCTV inspection could be upgraded, instead using SL-RAT to identify whether or not a pipe needs cleaning.

“We are continuing to successfully use SL-RAT to manage maintenance programs in our wastewater systems,” says Mr Barclay.

New Zealand

Over the past few years, there has been a steady increase in the number of sewer overflow incidents in Taupo, New Zealand, which has caused concerns for public health, water quality, businesses and the reputation of the district.

“In order to address these issues, Taupo District Council developed the sewer overflow reduction strategy, employing the latest technology to quickly reduce the risk of an overflow occurring and to provide vital asset data,” says Taupo District Council 3 Waters Network Engineer Graeme Jackson.

Mr Jackson says the system was chosen as the ideal technology to achieve the strategy, identified after a review of the available industry technologies.

“SL-RAT was selected due to it being a quick and cost-effective way to identify problems within the pipework. The information gained from the device would then drive where cleaning and CCTV work needs to take place,” he says.

“By using this strategy, there is a significant cost and time saving over traditional methods and the asset data gained by using SL-RAT is a valuable tool for reducing sewer overflows.”

SL-RAT is now an integral part of the overflow reduction strategy, already contributing to the resolution of current issues on the sewer network.

“SL-RAT has proved to be a robust, quick and easy to use product,” says Mr Jackson.

“We have been able to address the immediate issues with our sewer network and significantly reduced the number of sewer overflows, with the added bonus of collecting excellent asset data. Our strategy is to continue to use the device and survey our entire network, both wastewater and stormwater, over the coming years.

“The information collected from SL-RAT survey work has helped to develop maintenance schedules and planned asset renewals. As most good engineers know: knowledge empowers good decision making. Quite simply, SL-RAT device assists with gathering the knowledge to make good decisions.”
