Under a Public-Private Partnership BrisConnections has contracted the Thiess John Holland joint venture to undertake the design, construction and commissioning of Airport Link, Northern Busway and Airport Roundabout Upgrade projects.
Airport Link is a 6.7 kilometre toll road, mainly underground, connecting the Clem 7 Tunnel, Inner City Bypass and local road network at Bowen Hills, to the northern arterials of Gympie Road and Stafford Road at Kedron, Sandgate Road and the East West Arterial leading to the airport.
The primary component of Airport Link is a $A3.4 billion toll road –
the majority underground – planned between Brisbane’s northern suburbs,
the airport and the inner city.
Two Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and up to 15 roadheaders will be used to construct the tunnels.
Kedron to Toombul with TBMs
An important section of the Airport Link project will rely on the two (TBMs) to excavate between Kedron to Toombul/Clayton.
Earth Pressure Balance machines have been selected due to the soft ground conditions.
John Holland Group Executive General Manager Russell Cuttler said that two Herrenknecht 12.5 diameter machines will arrive early next year, involving approximately 159 containers plus associated cargo.
