On paper, there are many large infrastructure projects being announced around Australia, such as the National Broadband Project, which should provide opportunities for trenchless operators. The ASTT is keen to see these projects implemented properly and with Trenchless Technology strongly considered at the design level for eventual construction utilising the benefits of the trenchless way. The Society is looking at improving its advocacy in these matters so that government and asset owners look at Trenchless Technology as a matter of course.
At the recent Annual General Meeting of the ASTT held 8 March 2010 in Brisbane, there were changes to some of the ASTT Councillors and I wish to take a moment to highlight these.
In NSW, Peter Brown was elected the new councillor and we welcome Peter into the position. Peter replaces John Monro, who had been the NSW Councillor for the previous seven years and had also held the position of Vice President of the ASTT. I would like to take this opportunity to thank John for his work over that time to assist the ASTT not only in NSW but on a national level. He did an excellent job for the ASTT and the Trenchless Technology industry and we thank him for his efforts.
In Tasmania, Graeme McArthur also has formally stepped down as the Tasmanian ASTT Councillor after many years. Graeme worked tirelessly in this role and was a real champion for the trenchless cause in Tasmania and his work will be sorely missed. The role of Tasmanian ASTT Councillor was not filled at the AGM and we will be looking to place this casual position soon so it does not remain vacant.
The ASTT has announced that it will formally bid for the rights to hold the International No-Dig Conference in Sydney in 2013. We think that Sydney would be a great international showcase after hosting previous International No-Dig Conferences in Perth (2000) and Brisbane (2006).The Society will get the opportunity to make its bid at the next International No-Dig which will take place in Singapore, to be held 8-10 November 2010. We hope that this will be an event that will attract a number of ASTT members because of its close proximity.
You should now be starting to plan for the Trenchless Live Event to be held at Coffs Harbour on 17-20 October 2010. This will sneak up on you quickly, so start making your plans soon. I look forward to seeing you there!

Chairman, ASTT
