It was great to welcome the many international guests that attended the conference and exhibition to Sydney. They included representatives of the ISTT and the many affiliated societies from around the world. It was also a pleasure to again meet many of the Australian and New Zealand visitors that attended.
The conference gave the opportunity to hear many excellent papers on various aspects of the trenchless industry from around the world. These papers were delivered by an array of international speakers and highly regarded local identities from the industry. The Trenchless Think Tank gave the ISTT an opportunity to obtain feedback on important issues to the Society, and ideas to work upon in the future.
The exhibition, which was sold out prior to the event, showcased the industry’s goods and services, and gave attendees the chance to update on the newest and latest developments and products.
There were several highlights on the social front, but my personal favourites were the Sydney Harbour cruise and the Gala Dinner. The cruise gave a unique opportunity for attendees to appreciate how beautiful a location Sydney is, with its many attractions. The Gala Dinner provided recognition to the best in the trenchless industry with the presentation of the prestigious ASTT and ISTT Awards. Congratulations to all of the award winners – for more information on these, turn to page 18.
At this event, Derek Choi became the new ISTT Chairman, and on behalf of the ASTT, I congratulate Derek and wish him well in his tenure. The ASTT also recognises the great efforts of Dr Samuel Ariaratnam as the previous Chairman of the ISTT and his promotion of the trenchless industry internationally.
With International No-Dig Down Under 2013 now behind us, the next focus for the ASTT will be:
- Determining the location of the next ASTT Conference and Exhibition, to be held in 2015
- Stepping up promotional activities for the trenchless industries in Australia and New Zealand
- Increasing advocacy to governments and asset owners about the use of Trenchless Technology
- Looking for further Trenchless Technology education opportunities around Australia and New Zealand to promote the industry.
I hope that our members will look to participate in the activities above and we welcome any suggestions and assistance in the planning of these.
