Smart Lock products have played a key role in pipeline repair works in west Sydney.

As Australia’s pipeline network grows, many of these assets, old and new, are in need of repair or maintenance. Sometimes, this can mean tearing out and replacing the pipeline altogether, but this is costly and, in residential or commercial areas, is a significant logistical challenge.

That’s why more asset owners are turning to pipeline rehabilitation as an alternative, restoring these critical assets to service for decades to come. This is particularly where the repair work involves new pipes.

And in the realm of pipeline repairs, it’s hard to look past Smart Lock Group.

Smart Lock Group recently teamed up with Subterra Civil to carry out important repair works around west Sydney.

Subterra Civil specialises in stormwater drainage installation and civil services throughout Sydney. The company provides a range of underground drainage installation and civil services to Tier 1 and Tier 2 contractors across NSW.

Two of Smart Lock Group’s flagship products – the Smart Lock and Smart Lock Big Bore – were recently utilised by the contractor to repair a major drainage pipeline in west Sydney.

Suitable for pipes ranging from 100m–900mm in diameter, Smart Locks can repair cracks, breaks, and voids in pipes. With a simple load, lock and leave design, installation is a cinch with no curing time required.

Designed for rapid deployment, these devices enable swift installations without the disruption associated with traditional repair methods. This efficiency not only cuts down operational costs but also minimises a project’s carbon footprint.

Big Bores are Smart Lock Group’s solution to large diameter drainage pipe repairs. Capable of point repairs in pipes ranging from 1050mm–2100mm diameter, the Big Bore is a two-piece stainless-steel band combined with an application specific resin impregnated fiberglass mat.

The Big Bore provides a permanent and tight-fitting seal that is 200m wide and 3mm thick.

Installation requires a hydraulic spreading tool as well as general tooling such as allen keys and a hammer. Considering the size of pipes that Big Bore was created to repair, installation is simple and approachable, typically taking 30–60 minutes, and can be managed by only one or two people.

For the west Sydney project, Subterra Civil installed roughly 33 Big Bore repairs [ranging between 1050mm–1500mm] and 40 Smart Locks [375mm–900mm].

Subterra Civil Director Christopher Noone was impressed by Big Bore’s clever design and ease of installation.

“The two-piece Big Bore units are easy and simple to install,” he said.

“Another benefit is that these products are locally made, so we were able to confirm the Big Bore and Smart Lock sizes, place an order, and the goods were manufactured and delivered to site within two weeks.

“Thanks to the speed and service provided by Smart Lock Group, we were able to meet our client’s timeframe for the project.”

As a cost-effective, efficient, and readily available solution to the problem of aging or damaged pipes, it’s little wonder that Smart Locks and Smart Lock Big Bores are taking off in the Australian pipeline sector.
