Using Ribline steel-reinforced polyethylene liner, Interflow is undertaking the first stage of the sewer main’s rehabilitation – the lining of approximately 1.3 km of sewer with a nominal diameter of 1,350 mm.
The project is part of an $A130 million package announced by Queensland Urban Utilities in February 2015. In total, up to 5.7 km of the S1 sewer will be relined.
According to an Interflow spokesperson, with a flow bypass not possible, the liner is being installed in live flow conditions.
Work on the project is undergoing at night to take advantage of low flow conditions, as well as to minimise traffic disruption.
Interflow expects the work to take approximately four months to complete.
The S1 sewer turns 100 this year and carries 60 per cent of Brisbane’s sewage. It runs up to 20 m deep beneath Kingsford Smith Drive, one of the city’s main roads.
