From the President’s desk Chris Frangos, ASTT President. As we emerge from the winter months, it is also an opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved in the first three quarters of the year. It has not all been plain sailing, the majority of what was planned is on track; however, there have been some setbacks. The pressure is on to finish the year strongly in preparation for a busy conference year in 2019. Mid-year trenchless forums have been held in Auckland and Brisbane. I had the pleasure of attending the Auckland forum which was held in the afternoon for…

From the President’s desk Chris Frangos, ASTT President. Welcome to the mid-year edition of Trenchless Australasia. At the time of writing the first round of trenchless forums, the ASTT AGM and Ozwater have all been held. Trenchless forums in Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch were held in March. All of the events were well attended, with New Zealand continuing to lead the way with the largest number of attendees. If you were not able to attend one of these forums, or have an interesting project you would like to present in the future, I would encourage you to look out…

From the President’s desk Chris Frangos, ASTT President. Welcome to 2018! On behalf of the ASTT, I would like to wish everyone a healthy and prosperous 2018. The year between our flagship No-Dig Under event is traditionally slower than normal; however, it does not feel like it this year. The ASTT has planned a full year of events and projects to continue to promote the great work of our small but dynamic industry. Some of the initiatives planned for 2018 include: Continuing the current format of Technical Forums, which will be run in Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington throughout 2018…

From the President’s desk Chris Frangos, ASTT President. I’d like to start with a very big thank you to everyone who made this year’s No-Dig Down Under a great event, when it took place on the Gold Coast in September.  I would especially like to single out the fantastic support we received from our major sponsors Vermeer, Ditch Witch, Interflow, Empire Infrastructure and Pezzimenti Tunnelbore, as well as the event’s international guests, speakers, delegates, visitors and organisers. The continued support of the event is greatly appreciated and ultimately provided all of the ingredients that yet again created another terrific showcase of…

From the President’s desk Chris Frangos, ASTT President. At the midpoint of the year, those of us in the lower half of Australasia are struggling through miserable weather and colds. As I was completing my research for this report, I thought of adding a nice motivational quote to cheer us all up to get through the winter. Unfortunately, half-time speeches are dominated by fairly obvious sports clichés like: “Don’t give up at half-time. Concentrate on winning the second half” – Coach Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant. Not particularly helpful in this context. I also came across the following quote and felt it particularly…

  • June 2017

From the President’s desk Chris Frangos, ASTT President. The ASTT AGM was held in Melbourne on 27 April 2017. After a productive two years as the ASTT President and several years as the New Zealand Councillor, Steven Apeldoorn announced that he would be stepping down from his position on the ASTT executive. Steven and I joined the ASTT council at around the same time and have seen the association grow and develop into a dynamic, progressive and successful advocate of all things trenchless. I would like to acknowledge and thank Steven for all that he has done for the ASTT over…

  • March 2017

From the President’s desk Steven Apeldoorn, ASTT President. Welcome to the first issue of Trenchless Australasia for 2017, and the 50th edition of Trenchless Australasia overall. Trenchless Australasia is the voice of the ASTT. The magazine has faithfully and triumphantly communicated almost everything the society has been involved in through 50 issues since 2004. The magazine has changed a bit over this time, but every issue has been a credit to our industry and a real asset. I would like to thank Great Southern Press, including everyone that has been involved over this time, for all of their hard work in…

  • December 2016

From the President’s desk Steven Apeldoorn, ASTT President. In many places across Australasia, Trenchless Technology is now a mainstream method for the construction and renewal of underground infrastructure. But for some utilities and their consultants there is still a ‘gap’ in their understanding of what can be achieved, and some questions about the integrity of some of the materials that are used in the industry. I had encountered this issue recently with a horizontal directional drilling (HDD) project. A council was specifying that all HDD installations, including pressure mains, required a guarantee of achieving a grade of 5 per cent or…

  • September 2016

From the President’s desk Steven Apeldoorn, ASTT President. As this issue goes to press, I am sure that we are all hoping that the colder, wetter weather is behind us. Certainly as I write this, the rain is steadily falling here in Auckland. Despite the winter gloominess there is a lot of good things going on. Here in New Zealand we have been preparing for the ASTT technical stream that will once again be part of the WaterNZ annual conference to be held at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre in October. We have also just held our 33rd Trenchless Technology Forum…

  • June 2016

From the President’s desk Steven Apeldoorn, ASTT President. The ASTT AGM was held in Melbourne on 5 May. I would like to acknowledge, with thanks, the elected councillors and executive for their ongoing generous commitment of their time for the year ahead. The council has remained unchanged from last year, and I believe that we have a good team to continue the work that has been already been done. Microtunnelling Special Interest Group (SIG) Jim Shooter attended the AGM and presented to the meeting an update on the activities that the, at this stage, small group of SIG members have been…

From the President’s desk Steven Apeldoorn, ASTT President. It’s a new year, and I wish our members all the best for a successful and happy 2016. Although we don’t have our No-Dig Down Under conference this year, we still have plenty planned, particularly around networking and new initiatives. Towards the end of last year a fantastic, motivated group of our members set about to establish the first two Special Interest Groups (SIGs). The first is a microtunnelling group, coordinated by Jim Shooter of Pezzimenti. The second is the lining group, coordinated by the ASTT’s 2015 Person of the Year, Lance Horlyk.…

From the President’s desk Steven Apeldoorn, ASTT President. Firstly, a big thank you to all of the ASTT’s members and guests that attended the Gold Coast No-Dig Down Under conference. The feedback I’ve received from individuals so far tells me that this was one of our best events yet, and I can sincerely say that I thoroughly enjoyed the papers, the Gold Coast venue and of course the social calendar. A big thank you also to Great Southern Press for putting on a great show and of course to our conference technical committee: Jeff Pace, Trevor Gosatti, Chris Frangos and Ben…

  • September 2015

From the President’s desk Steven Apeldoorn, ASTT President. Conference time, once more, gives us the opportunity to get the industry together, catch-up with colleagues and friends, discover and share new technology, as well as celebrate the advances that we have made. The Gold Coast No-Dig will have an impressive 5,000 square metres of exhibition space (as big as the Sydney ISTT conference in 2013), with 1,500 expected delegates and trade visitors. This is fantastic for a regional event and extremely positive for the ASTT. Conferences are always a big event on the Society’s calendar, but this particular conference is made even…

From the President’s desk Steven Apeldoorn, ASTT President. It is with pleasure that I write this first report to you all in my new role as President of the ASTT. My first task is to thank Trevor Gosatti, the outgoing President, for all of his hard work and commitment to the Society over his tenure of the past six years. I am happy to report that Trevor remains a key person on the ASTT Council as the Western Australia Councillor. Trevor’s passion is in training development, and I have asked Trevor to continue this work in a training liaison role for…

From the Chairman’s desk Trevor Gosatti, ASTT Chairman We are heading full speed into 2015 and members of the Australasian Society of Trenchless Technology (ASTT) and the trenchless industry in general should be able to look forward to a number of items this year. The major event for the Australasian Society of Trenchless Technology this year is No-Dig Down Under to be held at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, Queensland, from 8-11 September 2015. This promises to be the must-see trenchless event for the year and strong interest is already building up to support this from sponsors, speakers, exhibitors and attendees.…

  • December 2014

From the Chairman’s desk Trevor Gosatti, ASTT Chairman Already we are heading towards the end of the year and the Christmas and New Year holidays are coming around fast. Where has this year gone? There is no doubt that 2014 has been a tough year in the civil contracting industry and, in particular, the trenchless sector for both Australia and New Zealand. There is a rationalisation occurring across many segments of the industry and there is no doubt that 2015 is going to look a little different in comparison to 2014. The ASTT has had the privilege of again partnering with…

From the Chairman’s desk Trevor Gosatti, ASTT Chairman This edition of Trenchless Australasia marks the 10th year anniversary of the magazine since it commenced, and the accompanying special publication with this edition will highlight the growth of this excellent publication over that time. Those ASTT members who have been around before 2004 will remember the newsletter ASTT provided as it’s communication to members and the industry in general. I am sure that in the special edition accompanying this magazine you will also read from Jeff Pace (ASTT Secretary), who was the person who had to produce those newsletters. How relieved he…

  • 10 years of Trenchless Australasia 2014

From the Prime Minister The Hon Tony Abbott, MP I am pleased to provide this message for Trenchless Australasia’s 10th anniversary. For ten years Trenchless Australasia has provided news and information to businesses in the $A132 billion engineering construction industry. This anniversary is an opportunity to acknowledge the important role Trenchless Technology plays in helping to build better and more modern infrastructure. As part of the Government’s Economic Action Strategy, we are building the infrastructure of the 21st century. The Government wants to see more cranes in the sky, bulldozers on the ground and tunnelling underground because new construction means more…

From the Chairman’s desk Trevor Gosatti, ASTT Chairman. We are now well and truly into the New Year for 2014 and I hope that it is looking like being a good one for you. As I said in the last edition of Trenchless Australasia, with International No-Dig Down Under 2013 now behind us, the focus of the ASTT has turned to: Determining the location of the next ASTT Conference and Exhibition to be held in 2015 Stepping up our promotion of the trenchless industries around Australia and New Zealand Increasing advocacy to governments and asset owners about the use of Trenchless…
