WeBuild’s North East Link project team is celebrating a big mark of progress.
Works on the ventilation tunnel are set to wrap up in the coming weeks. The almost 300m-long tunnel was excavated using a single road header, with works first starting back in late 2023.
From here, excavation of the passages that will link the vent tunnel to the road tunnel will start.
The ventilation tunnel runs alongside the road tunnel and will work to maintain safe air quality for road users and the local community.
Webuild, as part of the Spark Joint Venture is delivering the North East Link tunnels for the Victorian Government. The project will enable a more sustainable future by taking 15,000 trucks off local roads every day and reducing travel times by up to 35 minutes for commuters. Once complete, it will be the longest road tunnel in Victoria.
Works include designing and building twin three-lane tunnels 6.5km long, among other related works. Once completed, it will be the longest road tunnel in Victoria.
The tunnelling work is part of the primary package awarded to the Spark consortium by the North East Link Program, which is overseeing the project’s development on behalf of the Victorian Government.
Construction on the North East Link Tunnels is now underway, with other secondary works packages progressively taken out to market. North East Link is expected to open in 2028.
