The pipeline will enable Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast to tap into the Victorian Government’s major water projects including the Sugarloaf Pipeline and the desalination plant from the end of 2011.
The 59 km pipeline will be 800 mm in diameter and will provide up to 16 billion litres of water a year, or 50 per cent of current demand.
Water Minister Tim Holding said the pipeline was an integral part of the State Government’s plan to establish a state-wide network of pipes to ensure water is available where and when it is needed most.
“Awarding the pipe contract is an important milestone. There was strong competition from international and domestic pipe suppliers and we are pleased that this pipe will be manufactured in Australia.
“The pipeline is the biggest project in Barwon Water’s history and has created jobs for 60 people during the design phase and will create an extra estimated 200 jobs during construction.”
Fibrelogic has worked on a number of major water projects around Australia including Wimmera Mallee Pipeline, Robinvale Irrigation Project and the Sydney and Perth desalination plants.
The project is expected to be completed in late 2011.
