Townsville City Council has started work on an $A43 million project to upgrade the water supply network within the city limits.
With the increasing growth of multi-storey residential and commercial development in the CBD, the major infrastructure project aims to improve the water pressure through Townsville’s expanding distribution network. Additionally, many of the 60-year-old water mains are near the end of their life expectancy.
Works will include:
- Building a new reservoir to service the CBD located at the top of Echlin Street, West End
- Upgrading trunk mains to improve CBD water supply and pressure
- Replacing reticulation water mains
- Replacing other infrastructure located in the vicinity of the proposed upgrades (eg sewers, drainage and footpaths)
- Reinstating footpaths and road pavement once all underground works are completed.
Works started mid-2015 and the project will be carried out over the next four years.
