The historic 100-year-old sewer pipe, which carries 60 per cent of the city’s sewage and lies eight storeys below the ground, is being rehabilitated in the AU$66 million upgrade.
Queensland Urban Utilities spokesperson, Michelle Cull, said the total upgrade involved relining 5.8 km of sewer main from James Street in Fortitude Valley to the Eagle Farm Pump Station in Bunya Street.
“With the first stage between Cooksley Street and Riverview Terrace due to be completed mid-November, work has now begun on the next section between Amy Street and Cooksley Street,” she said.
“So far we’ve relined 1.6 km of pipe with another 4.2 km to go. The work will be carried out Sunday to Thursday between 8 pm and 5 am.
“We’re using the latest Trenchless Technology to avoid digging up the road and disrupting traffic.”
The award winning project, which is one of the most challenging sewer rehabilitations ever undertaken in Australia due to the age and depth of the pipe, is due to be completed by 2019.
