Over the last 12 months, TasWater’s renewals team has completed several upgrades through the use of trenchless technology.
Across the past year, TasWater’s renewals team relined 7.7km of sewer main, preventing cracks and leaks.
The utility also upgraded 7.9km of water mains and installed 263 customer connections, ensuring safe and reliable water supply across its network.
In July 2023, the utility announced an extensive state-wide rehabilitation project to clean, inspect and reline sections of the state’s vast sewer system. Currently, the project is taking place in and around Launceston and the south.
Last month, horizontal directional drilling played a critical role in delivering an important water pipeline for the utility.
The 3km pipeline was installed 40m underneath the Tamar Estuary River in Launceston, redirecting sewerage and stormwater flows to the Ti Tree Bend sewerage treatment plant. This is expected to help preserve the river for years to come by preventing overflow events.
“The estuary is incredibly important to our community, and the City of Launceston is proud to support TERHAP with a funding commitment of $11 million,” City of Launceston Deputy Mayor Hugh McKenzie said.
“This is one of the largest infrastructure projects of its type in the southern hemisphere, and once completed the pipeline will significantly improve the overall health of the waterway by reducing the frequency and volume of overflow events.”
