WDS is a multidisciplinary company, offering a total solution to clients with the group having capabilities in mining, pipeline construction, tunnelling, fabrication and engineering design.

WDS has core capabilities in:

  • tunnelling – large diameter and microtunnelling services;
  • engineering and construction – from wellhead to delivery point services;
  • pipelines – energy, water and wastewater infrastructure; and
  • mining services – total project management services.

Operating throughout Australia and the Middle East, WDS is known for its innovative approach to project design, project execution and being able to deliver on technically challenging projects. This has enabled WDS to maintain strong relationships with a number of key clients whilst also expanding its client base.

Tunnelling services

With triple certification in safety, environment and quality assurance the Tunnelling Division is one of the leading microtunnelling contractors in Australia and can provide the total service from conceptual design and planning through to commissioning and maintenance. WDS said the methods used by the company offer a distinct environmental benefit over its competitors by reducing the requirement for dewatering and resulting in a minimal construction footprint on the surface above.

Utilising the latest technology, WDS is able to provide a cost-effective solution which is backed by extensive experience and a dedicated workforce. The Tunnelling Division has an enviable track record with microtunnelling capabilities in pipe diameters from 150 mm up to 2.2 metres through a range of ground conditions. Drawing on the wider groups experience WDS can offer capability in larger diameter tunnelling and cavern excavation. The Mining division holds the regional supplier licence for Mitsui Road Headers.

The company combines specialist labour, risk management processes, equipment, and project management expertise to provide a diverse range of underground sewerage, water and drainage solutions.

The Tunnelling Division’s outlook is strong, with projects secured in Kuwait, and projects underway in Broome, Western Australia; Gold Coast, Queensland; and Hoxton Park and Narrabeen in New South Wales.

About WDS Limited

WDS is an ASX listed company, employing in excess of 500 personnel throughout Australia and the Middle East. Its origins can be traced back through Walter Mining, the Walter Construction group and Concrete Constructions. Walter Mining came about as a result of a management buyout following the demise of Walter Construction. Walter Mining continued its contract mining work in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Diversified Construction Corporation (DCC) was formed in 2000 as a specialist pipeline contractor in Queensland. The two companies combined in 2006 to form Walter Diversified Services but continued to operate in their respective fields under their original company names. In 2006 WDS Limited was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

In 2004, Diversified Engineering Corporation (DEC) was formed to offer fabrication services to complement DCC’s operations. This steel fabrication company is based in Jandakot in Western Australia and offers fabrication, welder training and certification, as well as welder labour hire to DCC and the oil and gas industry. WDS Limited purchased DEC in November 2006.

In September 2007, DJ and MB MacCormick was purchased from the MacCormick family and renamed MacCormick Civil and Tunnelling Pty Ltd. A new head office was established in the Perth, Western Australia, whilst the maintenance and storage facility remains at Maddington.

In March 2008, WDS Limited acquired Ackroyd Engineering Services (AES) to complement the fabrication business group. AES is based in Tweed Heads, New South Wales and has a fabrication workshop in Brisbane. In August 2008, the group was expanded further with the acquisition of Delco, a pipeline contractor also based in Brisbane, Queensland.

During 2009, the Group restructured their operations to better demonstrate the Group’s depth and range of services offered to clients. This incorporated a broader rebranding of the entire Group to WDS Limited. WDS has operating divisions of Infrastructure and Services, (comprising Fabrication, Water, Civil and Tunnelling), Oil and Gas and Mining. WDS has a national footprint with offices in North Sydney (head office), Brisbane, and Perth, whilst also having operations in the Middle East.
