The third stage of Greater Wester Water’s $80 million four-stage CBD Sewer Augmentation project has kicked off in Melbourne.
The third stage of the upgrade, being completed by microtunnelling specialist contractor Rob Carr, includes constructing a 700 m sewer along Elizabeth Street, commencing between Lonsdale and Little Lonsdale Street.
Greater Western Water’s General Manager Growth and Infrastructure, Amanda Smith, said that the existing sewer network is over 120 years old, requiring more capacity in the face of population growth.
The contract follows Rob Carr’s successful delivery of the project’s previous package of work on the adjacent Lonsdale Street.
The Elizabeth Street Sewer Upgrade project will be completed by late 2023 and will link with the Lonsdale Street sewer completed in September 2021.
Melbourne’s CBD currently hosts a large number of construction projects, creating logistical challenges.
“We have worked with our partners and stakeholders to consider overall impacts,” said Smith. “We’ll be keeping people well informed of temporary changes and, importantly, water or sewerage services will not be impacted while work is in progress.”
GWW advised that the fourth and final stage of the upgrade will be along Siddeley Street in Docklands, with construction scheduled to commence late next year.
